Cookie consent is not just a pop-up

Instead of bundling mandatory technical records with ad tracking in one button, what is required must be separated clearly.

Cookie consent is not just a pop-up

27 September 20266 min readWYN Studio

A record the site needs to work and a tool used for behaviour analytics or ad measurement are not in the same legal and experiential category. Showing this clearly to the user is part of trust.

What does a good preference screen say?

What each category does, why it is used, and how the choice can be changed should be told in short sentences. Designs that show the “accept” button but hide the “reject” option do not offer the user a real choice.

Technical implementation

  • Not running non-required scripts before a preference arrives.
  • Remembering the preference with a secure, limited record.
  • Stopping the relevant tool when consent is withdrawn.
  • Keeping the inventory, provider and retention period current.

Current state at WYN

In this site’s current setup no marketing cookie that builds an advertising profile is active. If optional analytics or personalisation is added, the cookie policy and the preference mechanism must be updated together.
