CMS security: why changing the password is not enough

20 September 20267 min readWYN Studio

Reducing CMS security to an admin account password leaves most of the attack surface unseen. Security also touches publishing habits.

Who adds content, who installs plugins, who reaches theme files? Separate accounts, least privilege, two-factor login and regular access reviews are the base layer.

Files and services

  • Remove unused plugins and themes.
  • Limit uploaded file types and sizes.
  • Protect the admin dashboard with extra access control.
  • Watch file changes and admin actions.
  • Keep restorable backups.

Updating is a process

Being “current” is not sustainable without pre-update testing, post-update smoke tests and rollback steps for failure.
