What does NIST’s AI-assisted cyber security approach say?

28 September 20267 min readWYN Studio

NIST’s AI-assisted CSF approach, opened for public comment in 2026, focuses on using artificial intelligence in analysis, planning and monitoring processes aligned with the cyber security framework.

What does AI do here?

It can summarise corporate policy and evidence, help with the current-state profile, and draft the first outline for the target state. But NIST’s approach also stresses that this is a working aid for human judgement, not automatic assurance.

Why documentation matters

Which document did the model use, which assumption did it make, which gap could it not spot? Without answers to these questions, AI output should not be used as a management decision.

Principles for safe use

  • Classify sensitive data before sending it to a model.
  • Verify outputs with evidence and sources.
  • Do not delegate decision authority to the model.
  • Record prompt and model versions.
