Why moving to passkeys is not only about removing passwords

Passkeys are a FIDO-based authentication approach that works with cryptographic key pairs instead of passwords. Because users never share a password, phishing and password-reuse risk drops; but a good migration plan is still needed.

Registration and recovery must be considered together

What happens when an employee moves to a new phone or loses a device? Should a passkey stay on one device, or sync through a trusted provider? In critical organisations this decision belongs together with the assurance level and the recovery process.

A good migration experience

  • Offering password and passkey together for a while.
  • Explaining to users what they set up and where they can manage it.
  • Not making the backup login method open to phishing.
  • Taking corporate device and role policies into account.
  • Supporting permission revocation and device loss.

Security and convenience can meet at the same goal

Designed well, passkeys shorten login time while offering a stronger path against credential theft. But a failed recovery flow can push users back to a weaker method.
