A runtime whose support has ended grows security and maintenance debt even while the app looks like it runs.

Why keeping PHP current is not only a developer’s job

Supported PHP versions receive regular bug and security updates. A web application “still opening” does not mean its runtime is secure and sustainable.

Active support and security support

PHP versions first pass through active support, then a period of critical security fixes only. Once a branch leaves support, the team maintaining the app must carry known issues on its own.

How to plan an upgrade

  • Inventory current PHP and extension versions.
  • Scan deprecated functions and third-party packages.
  • Test real user flows in a staging environment.
  • Verify database, queues, cron and file permissions together.
  • Never upgrade production without a rollback plan.

The WYN approach

We treat a runtime upgrade not as one-off tech debt cleanup, but as an investment that widens the product’s future room to move. Security updates, performance and maintenance cost are evaluated on the same table.
