A design system is not just a colour and button library

A design system is not about using the same button everywhere. When a warning appears, what an empty state says, and how focus and error behaviour work are also part of the system.

From visual tokens to behaviour

Colour, spacing, radius and typography are the base layer. On top of them, a component’s states, content length, keyboard use, mobile breakpoints and error message behaviour must be defined.

What does a good system speed up?

  • Producing new screens.
  • Communication between design and code.
  • Responsive decisions.
  • Accessibility audits.
  • Consistency as the product grows.

Documentation is a living thing

Showing how a component looks matters as much as telling when it should not be used. The system learns new states as it is used inside the real product, and gets updated.
