Security on a WordPress site cannot be measured by the core version alone. Theme, plugins, admin accounts, hosting configuration and the backup plan must be evaluated together.
Three checks before updating
- Record working versions and change history.
- Keep a revertible, testable staging copy.
- Check core, plugin and theme compatibility.
Automatic updates do not solve everything
Automatic updates can be a good layer of defence, but they cannot know on their own whether a critical plugin breaks the checkout flow, whether a licence is valid, or whether old code works with a new PHP version.
After publishing
When the update finishes, verify login, forms, payments, media uploads, cache and third-party integrations with a short checklist. Errors may be piling up in logs while the site looks like it works.
