CURRENT / SUPPLY CHAIN

How does npm staged publishing strengthen the software supply chain?

02 October 20268 min readWYN Studio

Open source packages are the invisible infrastructure of modern software. When a maintainer account is compromised, hundreds of projects can be affected through a trusted package.

What does staged publishing do?

In the model GitHub announced for npm, a package waits in a stage before becoming installable by everyone and passes an extra approval from an authorised maintainer. This adds a new control to the attack chain even if CI/CD credentials are stolen.

What should teams do today?

  • Reduce long-lived publish tokens for CI/CD.
  • Evaluate trusted publishing and OIDC options.
  • Track dependencies with lockfiles and regular scans.
  • Verify a new package really comes from the expected source.
  • Limit install scripts and network access.

The trust chain starts on the developer machine

If scripts running at install time can reach CI secrets, a package is not only a dependency. Knowing in which permission environment dependencies run matters as much as updating them.
