What changes when npm packages are scanned before publishing?

01 October 20266 min readWYN Studio

The publish-time malware scanning npm announced in 2026 aims to let new packages be scanned before opening to everyone. For teams that publish packages this means a security gain as well as a small change in pipeline behaviour.

Why is the pipeline affected?

If a script assumes “publish finished, the package is immediately installable”, a short wait or manual review flow can fail. The difference between publishing and availability must be stated explicitly to the automation.

A solid publish flow

  • Recording the package version and checksum.
  • Verifying visibility in the registry after publishing.
  • Running a smoke test before automatic consumption.
  • Turning waiting or review states into controlled states, not errors.

This is a last layer of defence

Scanning matters, but developer accounts, CI permissions, dependency pinning and code review are still required. Supply chain security is too wide to leave to one service’s decision.
